Oh dear lord, they think of everything for kids these days…

Guillermo Del Toro Heads For Antarctic Terror…

Another project in the works for Guillermo Del Toro comes in the form of an adaptation of H.P Lovecraft’s At The Mountains Of Madness.

Centred around an expedition to Antarctica where undiscovered terror waits beyond a mountain range taller than the Himalayas, Lovecraft’s tale features some pretty bizarre beasties – see artist’s representations below – along with six foot tall penguins, and a giant abandoned city.

All sounds a tad mental, but the original novella itself is as creepy as hell and could turn into a genre classic if Del Toro pulls it off.
Having kept the project on the backburner as one he always intended to tackle, Del Toro has had his screenplay kicking around for quite a few years now. Doing justice to Lovecraft’s descriptions of the creatures, relics and architecture found in the city would take a lot of money and effects work, so it’s been a struggle to find financing. This is where the ‘benevolent uncle’ figure of one Mr James Cameron has stepped in, providing the backing and technical help Del Toro will most probably need.

If there is one thing Del Toro seems made for, its tackling a bit of Lovecraft. About time someone did it right. Previous film translations of the Cthulhu Mythos and all that jazz have been a bit hit and miss so far.

Ancient evil unleashed by a group of men drilling in centuries-old ice? Think John Carpenter’s The Thing, multiply by fourteen, then throw in a horror unimaginable for good measure…

Oh this could be good.

Nick Cave Drafted in for Crow Rewrite?

More news on director Stephen Norrington’s reboot of The Crow has surfaced this week. With an Eric Draven still to be found, singer-songwriter, author and screenwriter Nick Cave has been drafted in for a rewrite of Norrington’s script.

Having done great things with The Proposition, and the dark Southern Gothic of debut novel And The Ass Saw The Angel, maybe he’s the right man to bring a helping hand to the project. While Blade was a winner, and I will defend the hell out of Death Machine – if only for some classic character naming – I’m not sure if there are many people who’d like to see another Norrington outing of the League of Extraordinary Gentleman calibre. Hopefully Cave can take him back to better territory.

I could go off on a Cave-love tangent, but think that’s best reserved for own blog as I don’t want to unleash too much mayhem on the lovely Live For Films here.
All I know is that my excitement radar for this project is now in action.

What’s your verdict? And who would make the perfect Eric Draven?

Previous details on Norrington’s reboot here.

Daniel Craig signs on for Fincher’s Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

While the search for the right Lisbeth Sander still continues, Daniel Craig has signed on to play journalist Mikael Blomkvist in David Fincher’s remake of Swedish thriller The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Based on Stieg Larsson’s bestselling book, the film looks set to be the first of a definite trilogy – so with Bond still on lockdown, maybe it’s a wise move for Craig to head into another franchise.

Original second instalment, The Girl Who Played With Fire is due for UK release in August, with final part The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest scheduled at the moment for a release some time in November.

What do we think of this then…
Have you read the Millennium Trilogy? Is Craig the right man for the job?

Alien Vs. Bender

What’s going on here then?
Giger’s Alien stalking Bender from Futurama with intent to kill?

Sculpted in sand for a recent ‘Legends of Science Fiction’ sand-sculpture competition held in Port Angeles, Washington, artist Carl Jara’s masterpiece was the overall winner.
Surely this is a battle that needs to make it to the big screen…

Cowboys and Aliens: First Picture

Jon Favreau gave fans a sneak preview of Cowboys and Aliens – starring Daniel Craig, Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde and Harrison Ford – at Comic Con yesterday. The film is due for release next year.
Explaining his inspiration as a mix of John Ford, Sergio Leone and classic Sci-Fi, Favreau still has a lot more shooting to do on his vision of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg’s graphic novel, but maybe it could turn out to be one of 2011’s big hitters…

First Official Photo of The Avengers

Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow)

Chris Evans (Captain America)
Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury)
Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye)
Mark Ruffalo (Hulk)
Joss Whedon (Writer/Director)
Kevin Feige (Marvel’s man with the plan)

Would you like Mark Ruffalo when he’s angry?

Where’s the big green guy then?

After Joss Whedon pulling a fast one on the interwebs with his Fillion fallacy, we can at least be sure of one thing – Mark Ruffalo will play the Hulk in The Avengers movie. With a varied mix of roles under his belt, it’ll be interesting to see how Ruffalo tackles his stint as Bruce Banner.

Joining existing franchise members – Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson and Don Cheadle – Ruffalo won’t be the only newcomer. It’s now official that Jeremy Renner will be taking the part of Hawkeye.
Wonder if that means there’s still a Mockingbird yet to be cast. Can’t have a lonely Clint Barton now, can we?

Apparently the film will centre around the beginnings of The Avengers, with Whedon telling io9:

“It just really just goes back to the very first incarnation of The Avengers. It goes to The Ultimates, it goes to everything about it. It makes no sense, it’s ridiculous. There’s a thunder god, there’s a green “ID” giant rage monster, there’s Captain America from the 40s, there’s Tony Stark who definitely doesn’t get along with anybody. Ultimately these people don’t belong together and the whole movie is about finding yourself from community. And finding that you not only belong together but you need each other, very much. Obviously this will be expressed through punching but it will be the heart of the film.”

What do you think? Is it all sounding good so far? Any characters you’d like to see that haven’t yet been mentioned?

Marvel Studios 2010 Comic-Con Panel

Crikey! What a star-studded extravaganza of excitement the Marvel Studios panel at this years Comic Con turned out to be!

  • Footage from the first eight days filming of Captain America: The First Avenger revealing Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull and the Cosmic Cube.
  • Kenneth Branagh’s vision of Thor being cast down to Earth from Asgard.
  • Kevin Feige hinting at future plans for The Punisher.
  • And just one more thing a la Columbo…
…Joss Whedon and his entire Avengers team popping in to say hello, with Mark Ruffalo confirmed as The Hulk and Jeremy Renner confirmed as Hawkeye.

They certainly delivered the star-factor, and judging by the descriptions of the crowd present in Hall H, Marvel kept the fans more than happy.
