Moon is in my top five best films of 2009 if not all time. An excellent low budget sci-fi film that I highly recommend. Sam Rockwell was just superb as the lonely Sam Bell.
The director, Duncan Jones has started up an online petition to get Sam Rockwell nominated for best actor at the Academy Awards. There is more on Duncan’s blog (such as that cool poster above by Magnulus).
Moon is one of those cool little movies that doesn’t have a big studio pushing it so if we can all help get it noticed at the Oscars that will be a job well done. Along with Rockwell getting a nomination I also feel Jones should be up for best director and the film should be in the running for Best Picture. The fact there will be 10 nominations in that category rather than the usual 5 may mean it has a chance.
We need films like this to show that intelligent, well made films with great performances still make an impact in the constant glare of the next big blockbuster that isn’t really that good.
Rockwell recently won the best actor award at Sitges and the Seattle International Film Fest for his role. The fact the film is basically just him shows you how much work he put in it.
If you liked the film, like Sam Rockwell, like sci-fi, like well made films, like independent filmmakers getting out there, like good stories, like great acting or even just like this site then go and put your name on the petition. Go on. It will only take a minute and if Rockwell does get nominated you can say to your mates, “I did that.”
