It looks as if Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) won’t be using the de-youngifying technology they used on Patrick Stewart in X-Men: The Last Stand and the Wolverine film. A sigh of relief goes up from the audience as they realise they would not be subjected to plastic face Picard.
Instead they are getting James McAvoy (Wanted, The Last Station) to play a young Charles Xavier in X-Men: First Class. This is the film charting the early days of the X-Men (still waiting to see how they’ll shoe horn in Wolverine – bound to happen. He’s the best there is at what he does and what he does is show up everywhere).
Heat Vision had the news and describe the film as “The epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Eric Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were the closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men”
Vaughn is writing the film with Kick-Ass co-writer, Jane Goldman. Bryan Singer is producing the film for Fox and they begin shooting in London this Summer for a 3rd June 2011 release.
McAvoy is the first piece of casting and it is not clear whether he will be going bald for the film. I’m just not sure if he is the right choice for a young Xavier. Surely someone like Billy Zane would have been the right choice for the part (for those just joining us, here at Live for Films we fell that the Zanester would be perfect for every role. It stems from an ancient charter or something Robert Rankinish)
What do you think of McAvoy playing Xavier? Who should star opposite him as Magneto? What female character are they boung to add to the mix to form a love triangle between them – Moira McTaggart maybe?
