UPDATED: Could Johnny Depp be Doctor Who on the big screen?

UPDATE: io9 checked with the BBC, and a rep says there are “no plans” for a Who movie, and any talk is “pure speculation.” END

I am saying a big fat no on this one, but a rumour has surfaced as they often do and I had to share it.

In the past Russell T Davies (previous head writer before Moffat) had said there would be Doctor Who movies but nothing had been heard in a while. Then Torchwood was going to be a global spanning series, but that got scaled down a bit. Matt Smith took over and delivered a blinder of a performance as the Doctor.

Now Tor.com, via io9, have this to say:

Sources are reporting that a big screen version of Doctor Who, written by former showrunner Russell T. Davies, is slated for release in 2012. Those same sources are also reporting that Johnny Depp has been confirmed in the iconic role of The Doctor.

Earlier this week, the news of Johnny Depp starring in Doctor Who appeared on article mill PubArticles:

Long-time producer of the television series Russell T. Davies reported that the reason he moved on from the show was due to the opportunity to transform the Doctor to the big screen. “Bringing the Who franchise to the theaters is a regeneration for the character beyond the usual one. A theatrical release has a greater range and can reach millions of more people than just the fans. There will be brand new concepts and the film will be just as adventurous, scary and humorous as the television programme. But none of us working the film will forget what makes the character great and interesting and the long-time fans will not be disappointed because yes, the Daleks make an appearance.”

The article goes on to say that the story will involve the Doctor going “on a journey through time and space with a crew of volunteers treating humanity’s illnesses brought on by invading aliens. He cures the bubonic plague and then goes to Africa to fight Ebola.”

Tor.com then go on to say that, while it can’t comment on possible story elements, the casting of Johnny Depp as the Doctor for a 2012 film is confirmed.

I’m still calling Bad Wolf on this one. Depp as Doctor Who? Would the BBC go for it? Can they afford it?

It just seems a bit weird and the plot doesn’t sound too hot. I really can’t see them rebooting Doctor Who in this way….mind you we are talking about movies and the studio people, so I may be posting news that this is actually all true in the next day or two. We shall have to wait and see. Maybe if they did do a film it would be like the old Peter Cushing Doctor Who movies that are not actually tied in with the series (although I wouldn’t be surprised if Steven Moffat managed to tie it in somehow).

If Depp was the Doctor and they had Torchwood involved then it would be Captain Jack Sparrow meets Captain Jack Harkness – John Barrowman must be wishing on a star that this comes true!

What do you think of the rumour? If it was on the big screen would you want Depp to play the Doctor or should Matt Smith do it? I could see Depp playing a cool Master.

The following are some fan made trailers showing Depp as the Doctor.

Here’s the thing. I’m a Dr Who fan through and through. But, if the movie is written by Russel T Davies AND stars anyone other than Matt Smith as the Doctor, forget it.

i could go for any one of the doctors from 2005-2010, but Depp is getting annoying and i don’t want him to Jack Sparrow the Doctor to death. Either Eccleston, Tennant or Smith will do awesome on a big screen production. Hell the perfect thing would be to have them all in the movie. Depp should keep to Pirates and make his own Pirates series or something.
