Guillermo Del Toro Heads For Antarctic Terror…

Another project in the works for Guillermo Del Toro comes in the form of an adaptation of H.P Lovecraft’s At The Mountains Of Madness.

Centred around an expedition to Antarctica where undiscovered terror waits beyond a mountain range taller than the Himalayas, Lovecraft’s tale features some pretty bizarre beasties – see artist’s representations below – along with six foot tall penguins, and a giant abandoned city.

All sounds a tad mental, but the original novella itself is as creepy as hell and could turn into a genre classic if Del Toro pulls it off.
Having kept the project on the backburner as one he always intended to tackle, Del Toro has had his screenplay kicking around for quite a few years now. Doing justice to Lovecraft’s descriptions of the creatures, relics and architecture found in the city would take a lot of money and effects work, so it’s been a struggle to find financing. This is where the ‘benevolent uncle’ figure of one Mr James Cameron has stepped in, providing the backing and technical help Del Toro will most probably need.

If there is one thing Del Toro seems made for, its tackling a bit of Lovecraft. About time someone did it right. Previous film translations of the Cthulhu Mythos and all that jazz have been a bit hit and miss so far.

Ancient evil unleashed by a group of men drilling in centuries-old ice? Think John Carpenter’s The Thing, multiply by fourteen, then throw in a horror unimaginable for good measure…

Oh this could be good.
