Matt Wagner’s Mage to be Moviefied – Magic is Green

Lloyd Levin, producer of Watchmen has got hold of Matt Wagner’s comic book, Mage.

It is a fantastic comic that is based on King Arthur. It follows the adventures of Kevin Matchstick, a man who discovers he has superhuman abilities, meets a wizard called Mirth, gains a magic baseball bat (Excalibur) and defeats the nefarious plans of a being called the Umbra Sprite.

“It has always been a favorite book of mine,” said Levin, whose comicbook-to-bigscreen credits also include the “Hellboy” films. “It’s one of the great untapped comicbooks from the ’80s renaissance that also spawned “Watchmen” and “Batman: Dark Knight.”

“It’s a great that Lloyd is taking on this material because his approach (to comicbooks) is to capture the essence of the original source material,” said Wagner, who is the writer and illustrator of the property. “The timing is good, too, because in the past, (filmmakers) tried to fix the material. Now they try to adhere to the material.”

Mage would make an excellent movie. Lots of great characters, magic and a story that is perfect for a series of films.

Fingers crossed the film gets made and does well as it could mean we get to see a film based on Wagner’s brilliant Grendel series. I’d love to see Hunter Rose on the big screen.

Who could play Kevin Matchstick (who looks an awful lot like Wagner) and Mirth?

I must dig out the Mage sketch I got from Matt Wagner.
