Samantha was kind enough to take some time out and have a little chat with your truly about films, jewellry and more.
You parents are both in the acting profession. Did you set out to follow them into the business or was it something you initially had no intention of doing?
Well put it this way: my parents are not stage parents at all. They never encouraged me to go into acting or anything in particular. They only cared about my education, personal discipline and my work ethic. They really encouraged reading, learning, traveling and art. Movies have been a big part of my life, watching them and going to sets with both of my parents. Watching films with my dad was a bonding experience because we would always discuss what we thought and how we felt about the film after. Let me also say we loved going to Sea World and I became a devout Tropical Fish Hobbyist at a very young age. I had 6 fish tanks by 7th grade. So being a Marine Biologist was always a life goal until I realized I hate being cold and wet and a lot if that career required work in the water. So around 18 I ruled that out as a career but I still studied it in University and to this day I still have a fish tank. Now I paint fish too. I love painting. I am a real fish nerd – I know more about tropical than I need to know.
Tell us about your role in Shoot the Hero?
Kate is the name of the character I played. From the moment I read the script I understood her. Understanding is key I think for an actor to play any role. People could read her character and from the page say, ‘wow what a bitch’. But I didn’t judge her, I just thought here is a girl who has a back story, she’s been in a relationship that is not making her satisfied and we come to realize why early on in the film. She is with a guy who she feels should “man up”, be more “mature”, “spend his money” more wisely etc. Basically it’s the way I think a lot of girls feel about their guys from time to time. Only in this case she feels really fed up and through the course of the film Kate sees another side to “Nate” (played by Jason Mewes) and she changes too. Kate softens and becomes someone who we come to understand and like. Nate and Kate become a real couple rather than two people just going through the motions.
What was it like working with Jason Mewes and Danny Trejo?
It was fun. Jason jokes a lot and Danny is really cool and chill.
As well as acting you have also developed a line of jewelry. How did that come about?
My jewellry line is earrings, necklaces and lapel pins made to hold water and living flowers. My grandmother inspired the whole line and if you want to learn more you can read up and also buy the jewelry online at www.fleurings.com
If you could have been in any film which one would it be and what role would you play?
There are so many great roles in history I hate to leave so many out. So I’m giving you my top five faves that come to mind which I would have fun playing…
1. Audrey Hepburn role in My Fair Lady
2. Julia Roberts role in Pretty Woman
3. Uma Thurman’s role in Kill Bill
4. Gweneth Paltrow’s role in Emma
5. Audrey Tatou in Coco Before Chanel
What has been your favorite film of 2010 so far?
“Kick-ass” the little girl in that film is awesome.
I believe your boyfriend recently had his first acting role in Land of the Astronauts. Could you tell us a little more about that? Did he enjoy it and what will he be in next?
Yes this film is his first role in a feature. Land of the Astronauts is based on 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was a small role but that how most first parts are! It was a great experience for him to be on set. He’s been in front of the camera for years as a model and with his skateboarding. He was sponsored by Chaos skate shop during high school. I think being in front of a camera is something he is used to and acting is perfect for his personality. He has the good looks and charm of Brad Pitt and Will Smith. His humor reminds me a lot of Will. Next for him is just getting more opportunities and auditions and he is writing a story called “American Sumo”.
Comic book movies are still very popular. Are there any comic book characters you would like to play on the big screen?
Yes they are very popular still… I would love to play a comic book character. Though before I can properly answer this question I would have to research more to see which I would want to play the most. All I know is that I love super powers and I am a very physical person with all of my yoga training so it would be great to play one of those roles.
What film do you first remember watching?
Dumbo. Does that count as a film? I also remember The Princess Bride very well.
If a movie monster was to kill you what would your final words be?
Bring it on.
Salted, sweet or butter popcorn?
Salted. Sometimes sweet. The butter makes me feel sick… it already come with butter flavoring.
With Halloween coming up what horror movies will you be watching?
None. I’m not a horror fan at all. The next Harry Potter is about as scary as I will go! While others are watching Carrie I’ll be reading a book in the other room. I love reading when I have the time.
