Buffy remake is going ahead and Joss Whedon responds

Joss Whedon created Buffy The Vampire Slayer. He wrote the script for the Kirsty Swanson film version and did wonders when it went to the TV version starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.

As is the way of the movie world, Hollywood are keen to get Buffy back on the big screen. They don’t want it to follow on from the TV show, nor from the comic book seasons that followed. Instead they are rebooting the whole damn thing and Whedon is not involved in any way.

Whit Anderson (Yes Man) is writing the script for the remake and producer, Charles Roven (Batman Begins) had this to say about the script when he spoke to the LA Times.

“Generally, I wouldn’t have said, ‘Let’s revive this,’ but Whit’s take is pretty compelling and a lot of fun, and it’s interesting to see all of this reimagined. This is a completely new reboot. Tone is extremely important, and you want the audience to realize what is at stake and the peril is real, but at the same time what’s going on should be fun and inviting and keep everyone engaged. It needs to be relevant to today too, and that is what Whit has found a way to do.”

“There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character’s return…While this is not your high-school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough and sexy as we all remember her to be.”

Not your high-school Buffy? So where could they be taking Buffy this time. As for there being an active fan base, that would be the one for Whedon’s version of Buffy. I am not sure if there is a fan base for a Buffy reboot.

E Online spoke to Joss Whedon about the reboot and this was his rather funny response.

This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.” Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, “I’ll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!” Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

What are your thoughts on the Buffy reboot? Who could play Buffy? What characters from the show need to be in the remake?

What on earth do they think they’re doing? NO way should anyone attempt to touch the Buffy legacy – Joss Whedon is the ONLY one who can write and direct this and it SHOULD be with the original cast – that is why people tuned in, for the creation not for some half lame reboot.

I hear you. An awful lot of dislike for the planned reboot. I am curious where it will be set or what characters they will use. Why reboot it though. Why not have another slayer from another time?

Precisely – leave it alone – call it The One Slayer so people know what it is and then go from there – No hope of ever achieving Buffy status with another writer and not using the iconic music and cast. JW is genius, I have yet to watch Dollhouse, but Angel and Firefly rocked – Buffy was one of my all time favourites. The cast was incredible and the acting and theme of using the monsters as dialogue for growing up, awesome and creative.

as long as Annaleigh Ashford plays Buffy, i’m quite all right. She can counter balance any crap direction or writing.
