Everyone loves a bit of tension in a film, especially when directors put in those ‘don’t get in that car’ moments for good, nerve rendering measure. Here’s our list of the 10 best moments that will leave you shouting at the screen.
The Hitcher
Directed by Robert Harmon and starring Rutger Hauer, C, the original Hitcher film features the classic ‘don’t get in that car’ moment. What makes it even better is that the film’s protagonist says “My mother told me never to do this” just as the aggressor gets into the car.
With a dark mise-en-scene and the generic rainfall, it makes for a tense few minutes. Happy viewing.
Deathproof
Kurt Russell, fast cars, fast women and Quentin Tarantino. What more could you want from a movie? How about a car chase scene? Well, in Deathproof, there are plenty.
Sure, this isn’t exactly a “don’t get in that car” moment, more a “get out of the car and run away until that bearded man stops chasing you” moment, but it’s definitely worth a watch.
Christine
Nerdy young boys always have back luck in life. School years suck, college years suck, and they have about as much luck with the ladies as Gandhi. Christine is a film that centres on a young nerdy boy who buys a car that has the mind of the devil. His own personality then changes and begins to reflect the cars’.
You know you’ve got problems when you start talking to your car – think Knight Rider. And there is plenty of that in this film.
Herbie: Fully Loaded
Not so much a moment, more a full film. It’s fair to say that most people, when watching Herbie, were saying “please don’t get in that car, seriously, don’t!”, because we all knew the second Lindsay Lohan did, we’d all end up with a truly god awful film.
It’s cheese symbolised perfectly in a motion picture. If you want boredom, excessive depression and an increased desire to end your life, here’s your film.
Hostage
Few Bruce Willis films after Die Hard lived up to expectations, but Hostage was a definite hit. Set in suburban America, the film sees ex-police negotiator and now local sheriff Bruce Willis help out in a massive stand-off between a bunch of ‘get rich quick’ robbers and a rich man’s family.
This scene shows the daughter of the rich man getting into her Dad’s Escalade which then prompts the ‘baddies’ to follow them home and do all sorts of crazy, testosterone fuelled misdemeanours.
The Godfather 2: Deleted Scenes
The Godfather is seen by many to be one of the finest gangster movies in the history of film, and it also manages to pull off one of the best “don’t get in that car” moments with Fabrizio. Watch the clip from around the 10:00 minute mark and you’ll see Fabrizio walking towards his car to an inevitable death.
It is old school and has poor effects by today’s standards, but that nostalgic feel is what makes The Godfather so watchable.
Maniac
Serial killers are the best, aren’t they? Perhaps not, but they are when it comes to making horror films exciting. There’s nothing better than a good pyscho to get the adrenaline pumping, and the 1980 film Maniac certainly does that.
Our leading man – the blood thirsty killer – is out for revenge due to his poor unbringing from his mother. So, what does he decide to do? Kill lots of women in New York – obviously!
The particular scene in question is notoriously famous for its realistic depiction of what a point blank blow to the head with a shotgun looks like. Special effects courtesy of gore maestro, Tom Savini, who garnered his inspiration from his own experiences in the Vietnam war… oh, and he also plays the hapless victim.
It’s a bit bloody, so viewer discretion strongly advised. Seriously NSFW!
Casino
Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci (who isn’t as annoying as he is in Lethal Weapon) and Sharon Stone – quite a cast, right? Casino shows the ups and downs of the millionaire lifestyle. From humble beginnings (apart from a scene including a vice and man’s head) to a greed empowered rivalry, it all escalates until somebody gets killed in the generic “let’s put a bomb under his car” trick.
De Niro looks cool as hell in this, so give it a watch if you get the chance.
Scream / Scream 2
If you love serial killers, you’ve got to love Scream – the movie that revived the style of 70’s/80’s-circa slasher movies, but paved the way for an endless stream of drivvle. Scary because it could well happen to you – probably – Scream depicts young teenagers getting slashed and diced by a rampant serial killer who wears a Halloween outfit every day of the year. Isn’t fashion a bitch?
Anyway, in this clip we see our young heroine, Neve Campbell narrowly escape a few lashings. Typically horrified by the presence of the killer, she decides the best thing to do is get in the car – big time fail for that, love.
And if that wasn’t enough, she only goes and does it again in the sequel. This time a new stalker, wearing the same infamous outfit, entraps two girls in a policecar and taunts the bejesus out of them. The policeman, in case you’re wondering, is sitting in the front of the car with a drastic knife wound to the head. Ouch! Another big time fail.
Jeepers Creepers
The 2001 horror flick Jeepers Creepers shows a brother and sister heading through the American countryside – you can guess where this is going, can’t you? In comes some weird flesh eating man thing and, a few subsequent deaths later, hysteria sets in.
In this scene the police are taken care of by Mr. Creepers in a not at all scary, but slightly humorous way. If you like death, police and weird serial killers dressed as a half human, half “I still don’t know what it is” thing, then this one will be right up your street.
There you have it. 10 of the best ‘don’t get in that car’ moments. Do you agree or disagree? What other similar scenes should be included?
