Jen Sachs is currently seeking funding to get The Fantastic Flights of Sophie Blanchard made and I for one want to see that happen.
It is a feature-length documentary that explores the life of the first professional female pilot. Captured as a witch, revered as the Madonna, and honored by an Emperor and a King, Sophie overcame countless physical and social challenges to rise to the forefront of the ballooning profession. Despite her celebrated career, she has virtually disappeared from history. Voiced by a narrator, the film combines live-action expert interviews and animated reenactments that bring this daredevil pilot to life for a modern audience.
How does someone like that get forgotten?
Production on the film began two years ago with seven international interviews including Tom Crouch, Senior Curator of the Division of Aeronautics at the National Air and Space Museum and Audouin Dollfus, a record-breaking French balloonist, astronomer, and author.
