Kenneth Branagh directed the first Thor movie. Due to creative differences he would not be returning for the sequel. He is still on good terms with Marvel Studios and has said he would love to direct another superhero movie.
Marvel then got Patty Jenkins attached to Thor 2. The Monster director had been working on the sequel and this Monday took part in an interview and photo shoot with THR.
“I have a long love of superhero films and I’d been saying over and over again to my agents at CAA that I’d like to do one,” Jenkins told THR. “That’s the real revolution. The Marvel guys are so brave in terms of who they choose overall, and I don’t think they had any pause about me being a woman.”
It all sounded like things would carry on fine. Then today news hit that Jenkins has left Thor 2 due to those creative differences.
“I have had a great time working at Marvel,” Jenkins told The Hollywood Reporter in an exclusive statement. “We parted on very good terms, and I look forward to working with them again.”
On all Marvel Studios films there have been various differences between the directors and studio so it is no surprise it has happened again.
Marvel have their eye on the big picture for their shared universe, but I do feel they need to strike a balance with the visions these excellent directors can bring to the comic book characters.
There is no word on who will replace Jenkins but they will have to move quickly as the film is scheduled for November 2013.
How do you feel about these creative differences and who should direct Thor 2?
