Condorman may fly once more

If you are of a certain age you may well remember Michael Crawford with a fake beard and a walking stick talking to some bad guys. The walking stick was actually a machine gun and went off with some hilarious consequences. You could also remember Crawford dressing up as a Condor with big wings and jumping off the Eiffel Tower.

My memory may have failed me on some of the details, but they were some of the things I recall about the 1981 Walt Disney movie, Condorman.

Inspired by Robert Sheckley’s The Game of X, Condorman follows comic book illustrator Woodrow Wilkins’ (Crawford) attempts to assist in the defection of a female Soviet KGB agent (Barbara Carrera). Oliver Reed played the bad guy.

It was not a great movie, but I do have fond memories of watching it.

Word on the street is that Disney may have another crack at the franchise. This time it may be animated (the character was animated during the opening credits of the film) and they may also try and fit the character into the Marvel Universe. Let me stress that this is just talk at the moment so no need to start getting angry or upset.

MovieHole had the news:

The idea remains the same”, a House of Mouse insider – albeit one that works in a producing capacity for animation, so hasn’t got a direct line to anyone on this particular production and has admittedly heard this all third hand – told me over Skype this morning. “Wally. A Brit again. Robert Pattinson’s name has been floated, can you see him going for it? He seems to be into more intellectual things?. Still a pompous cartoonist turned superhero type gets to assist in the deflection of a sexy young KGB agent. Emphasis would be more on action this time around though. They want to steer as far off from Johnny English territory as possible. But there’s talk of doing lots with the Condorman brand. Guessing you’ll hear more about it soon Clint” One of the big supporters behind the resurrection of Condorman is Stephen Wackler, an editor on ”Amazing Spider-Man”. He, and quite a few others, believe that with Disney now doing Marvel’s movies, they should consider making the character part of the Marvel Universe. Either way, “it would all begin with a solo movie – the obligatory origins movie.”

It is doubtful that this will go much further as the original did not make much money. However, going animated may give Condorman a second chance.

Would you watch a new Condorman movie? Should it be animated or live action?
