M. Night Shyamalan‘s After Earth gets a trailer

After the huge mess that was The Last Airbender, M Night Shyamalan has got to deliver the goods with After Earth.

A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.

The opening of the trailer reminds me of Enemy Mine before it hits an Avatar type vibe. I’m not sure about Will Smith’s monologue. Seems a little clunky.

I also hope there is no Shyamalan twist where it turns out they went back in time and end up being the first humans or something like that.

The fact it is a Shyamalan film probably colours my feeling on the new film. If it was by anyone else I would be more excited. Hopefully he has learnt from his mistakes and this will be a good film with a decent story.

The film also stars Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo, Isabelle Fuhrman and opens June 7, 2013.
