The sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man already has Jamie Foxx on board as Electro, but it appears they will be going the multiple villain route.
According to THR, Paul Giamatti is in talks for the role of the Rhino.
The Rhino is one of Spidey’s classic villains and is basically a big, stupid guy stuck in a Rhino suit which made him invulnerable. He also has superhuman strength and speed and has had some huge fights in the comics.
Although I would never have thought of Giamatti in the role it turns out he has wanted to play the character for a long time.
“I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid,” he told ShowbizSpy in March 2011. “It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit, and I always thought, ‘Why don’t they have The Rhino in one of their movies.’ But maybe The Rhino wasn’t that big of a deal for anybody but me. … If they ever go with The Rhino, I would be ready and waiting.”
He also spoke about the character when he appeared on The Conan O’Brien Show.
He would be joining Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, and Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborne.
I am not sure about them having two bad guys in the next film. It always seems to detract from the power of each villain and remember Spider-Man 3 when they had Sandman and Venom. Oh and the new Green Goblin. Still, Giamatti is a great actor and could bring an awful lot more to the role than just a dumb thug.
THR also say that Felicity Jones (Like Crazy, Chalet Girl) is in talks for an unspecified role in the Marc Webb film.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has a release date of 2nd May 2014.
