Michael Rooker joins the Guardians of the Galaxy

Michael RookerWe have been wondering whether Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead) would be involved in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel Studios.

They have worked together on Slither and Super so it seemed very possible. The money was on him playing /voicing either Groot or Rocket Raccoon.

Chris Pratt is playing Star-Lord, Dave Bautista is Drax and Zoe Saldana is in talks for Gamora. That only left Groot and Rocket Raccoon as the members of the team left to be filled.

It turns out Rooker is going to be involved in the film, but not as one of those characters.

According to Deadline he will be playing Yondu who was a member of the older version of the Guardians first seen in the Marvel Super-Heroes comic way back in 1969 – This team was around in the 31st Century and was composed of Major Vance Astro, an astronaut from the 20th century Earth who spends a thousand years travelling to Alpha Centauri in suspended animation. He is also the future alternate universe counterpart of Vance Astrovik, the hero known as Justice. Martinex T’Naga, a crystalline being from Pluto; Captain Charlie-27, a soldier from Jupiter; and Yondu Udonta, a blue-skinned “noble savage” from Centauri-IV.

Yondu Udonta was a game hunter of the primitive Zatoan tribe, which were humanoid beings who were native to Centauri IV. The first planet system to be colonized outside of the Sun’s solar system; the colonization took place sometime during the 29th century.

Yondu possesses no superhuman physical powers, but is a natural mystic, like his entire tribe. As a member of the alien race of the planet Centauri IV, Yondu possesses an intuitive mystical “sixth sense” perception that permits him limited empathic relationships with other lifeforms. The higher the lifeform, the more limited is his empathic potential. Additionally, Yondu possesses an intuitive and rather mystical rapport with nature, particularly with his own world, but also with any world that still possesses natural wildlife. With this rapport, he can sense incongruous elements (foreign bodies or substances) or focus on specific elements within the whole (such as the location of a given plant). He is also sensitive to mystical beings and forces and is able to detect their presence and activities without effort. By going into a trance, Yondu is able to replenish his own inner strength by communing with natural forces – Wiki

This is the first we have heard of one of the original Guardians showing up in the film. There is no word how big a role it will be. Maybe there will be an opening with the original Guardians. In the comics Vance Astro turned up in the latest team due to wibbly wobbly timey wimey things.

Whatever they do with the character it is just fantastic news that Rooker is involved.

Now if they could just get Norman Reedus involved to play another character that would be brilliant.

At least Rooker seems to be getting into the whole Mohawk vibe as this photo he posted on Instagram shows.
