The D23 Disney convention covered many new films that will be heading our way.
They also shared a new, more detailed synopsis for Maleficent which is the Sleeping Beauty film from the viewpoint of the villainess, played by Angelina Jolie.
“Maleficent” is the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.
Robert Stromberg directs. The films also stars Sharlto Copley as the King, Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, and Lesley Manville as the three good fairies and Elle Fanning as Aurora.
Some footage from the film was shown at D23 so hopefully it will be on the internet soon. Jolie also spoke about the role.
These little kids would visit the set, and I would think, ‘Oh, I am a Disney character,’ so I would go over to them, and say, ‘Hi there.’ They would just scream. One little kid even said, ‘Mommy, please make the mean witch stop talking to me.’
Maleficent is out on July 2, 2014.
